What is a Doula?

A doula is a woman with special training in childbirth. She provides continuous emotional & informational support during labor, birth, and the postpartum period.

Your doula meets with you before the birth and stays with you during labor.

After the baby is born she assists with bonding and breastfeeding. Postpartum doulas may also be available to assist with baby care and to assist parents in the weeks following the birth of your baby.

Birth doulas specialize in pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate postpartum period. She meets with you before the birth to discuss pregnancy, birth plans, and emotional and physical needs during the birthing year. Your doula joins you in labor to provide comfort measures. Encouragement, and support and stays until the baby is born and the family is well cared for. She then meets with you a few times after the birth to discuss the birth, baby care, breastfeeding and on going needs.

  • Studies have shown that having a doula as part of the birth team decreases:

    • the overall cesarean rate by 50%
    • the length of labor by 25%
    • the use of pitocin by 40%
    • the request for epidurals by 60%

Research shows parents who receive Doula support:

    • feel more secure and cared for
    • are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
    • have greater success with breastfeeding
    • have greater self-confidence
    • have less postpartum depression
    • have lower incidence of abuse

WHY USE A DOULA?

Numerous studies demonstrate the benefits of having a doula present during labor. A recent Cochrane Continuous Support for Women During , showed that when a doula was present; women were less likely to need pain relief medications, less likely to have a cesarean birth, and reported having a more positive childbirth experience.
